Back to School Books – Favorites for Beginning Independent Readers

To conclude this series about books with the theme of back to school, the focus will be on children who are beginning independent readers.  Suggestions will include an online leveled reader and chapter books great for your 1st through 3rd grader.  These stories will help your children get back into “school mode” as summer winds down.  These back to school books are favorites for beginning independent readers.

One fun school-themed story for lower-elementary school children is Cool Zone with the Paint and The Great One by Judy Blume.  This early reader chapter book is about Abigail (The Great One), who is in 3rd grade, and her brother, Jake (The Pain), who is in 1st grade and their experiences in school.  The story is told from two perspectives and in the end they realize that while there are small annoyances between them that they can always count on each other.  This is the second book in the series.

A different twist on reading is to read online.  The Clifford series has a websites with interactive stories for beginning.  Children can read independently, have the story read to them, and then also make choices of words to complete the sentences of the story with repetition. One of these flash stories is called Emily Elizabeth Goes to School where Emily, Clifford’s owner, tells the tales of her days at school.  Clifford then gets to come visit at recess.  It is a very cute interactive story to help children practice their phonic skills.

What are your favorite back-to-school themed books that you have read or plan to read to your children?  What other ways do you get your children in the mind set for heading back to school?
