Great Summer Read-Alouds for All Ages
During the summer months, bedtime is a great time to snuggle up with your children in bed for a read-aloud story. You can even take turns if your children are independent readers. Reading aloud helps to build phonemic awareness and decoding skills as well as building an intrinsic desire for reading.
Read-Aloud Books by Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl has many books that are great for reading aloud. James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Witches have imaginative plot lines, stories that are versatile for boys and girls, as well as being entertaining for a wide variety of ages.
Read-Aloud Picture Books by Eric Carle
Another author that has picture books that are perfect when read aloud because of their captivating pictures and simple, yet engaging story lines is Eric Carle. Both my 1 year old and my nephew who is 5 both love Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The interactive nature and repetition make them fun bedtime reads.
How to Eat Fried Worms
Lastly, How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell is a perfect (and gross) book that will keep your kids laughing. The imagery in this story makes it a good read-aloud book for all ages. After reading the book together, you can even watch the movie and then compare and contrast the two stories and vote on which was better (they almost always choose the book.) This helps to reinforce a love of reading.
What are your favorite stories to read aloud at bedtime with your children? I hope you enjoyed this series on summer story selections.
