Spooky Mysteries for your Tween

With Halloween right around the corner, October is a great month to encourage your child to read mysteries. The genre of mysteries engages young readers because it turns them into a detective to follow the clues that they have to try to decipher the mystery. It is also one of the most popular genres for adult readers too! Here are a few great mystery reads for your tween to read this October.

  • A Series of Unfortunate Events is an award winning series by Lemony Snicket. It is a spooky mystery series about three children and their adventures and travels when placed in the custody of a distant cousin, Count Olaf, and various other guardians throughout the series. The plot can range from dark to silly, so you may want to read this book together with a younger reader.
  • Another one of my all-time favorite mystery novels is From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. This mystery is about a brother and sister who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They end up getting caught up in a mystery about a piece of artwork possibly created by Michelangelo that was purchased at an auction at a very low price. Their adventures lead them to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler to help solve the mystery.
  • When You Reach Me is a more recent award-winning novel by Rebecca Stead. The story is about a girl named Miranda and the mysterious notes she keeps receiving that contain details that no one should know about her life. She needs to solve the mystery to help save her best friend Sal.
